I'll admit. When that bra status thing happened, I participated mindlessly. I mean, why not have a fun secret from men, right? The bra business was some phenomenon.
But critics, I think, are right. What good has it done? Unless it got a woman thinking about her breasts, or a man thinking about his loved one's breasts (Stop giggling. I'm talking about making sure she checks them regularly.), it's little more than a game that will be forgotten as soon as someone else comes up with a "secret" status idea.
Because I think education is a good way to start really getting at the meat of an issue, here's some information that I thought would be helpful to include on my little blog:
- Basics of Breast Cancer, by Mayo Clinic
- U.S. News Cancer Center, by U.S. News & World Report
- How to Conduct a Breast Self-Exam, by BreastCancer.org
- Breast Self-Exam Demonstration Video, by Discovery Health (NOTE: While medical in nature, I consider this video only appropriate for adult viewership.)
- Mammogram Discussion, by WebMD
- Fundraising, advocacy, awareness, and support, by Susan G. Komen for the Cure
- National Breast Cancer Awareness Month (NBCAM), and support, by NBCAM
